🇬🇧 Over the last weekend of September Altea holds its main fiestas, in honour of the Santíssim Crist del Sagrari and Sant Blai, and they are the largest thing that happens here all year. Eighteen filaes — the Moorish and Christian companies — take over the streets with parades, mock battles, brass bands and mascletaes. The fiestas are recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico of the Valencian Community.
Two evenings carry the weight: the Moorish parade on Saturday and the Christian parade on Monday, both starting around 20:00 and moving along the avenue past the town hall. Chairs are set out along the route because a parade easily runs several hours; you can also simply stand. The embajadas, the staged negotiations between the two sides that end in a surrender, are performed on the Plaça de l'Església in front of the blue-domed church.
The religious half runs in parallel and is older: a nine-day novenari, the floral offering to the Verge del Consol, patron of Altea, and the re-enactment of the arrival of the Christ figure in the bay. Sunday is the day of the Crist del Sagrari, with a midday mass, an afternoon procession through the old town and fireworks over the seafront at night. Expect road closures in the centre and no parking anywhere near the old town.
🇳🇱 In het laatste weekend van september viert Altea zijn hoofdfeesten ter ere van de Santíssim Crist del Sagrari en Sant Blai, en dat is het grootste wat hier het hele jaar gebeurt. Achttien filaes — de Moorse en christelijke groepen — nemen de straten over met optochten, schijngevechten, muziekkorpsen en mascletaes. De feesten zijn erkend als Fiesta de Interés Turístico van de Valenciaanse gemeenschap.
Twee avonden dragen het geheel: de Moorse optocht op zaterdag en de christelijke op maandag, allebei rond 20:00 uur, over de avenida langs het gemeentehuis. Langs de route staan stoelen, want zo'n optocht duurt makkelijk enkele uren; staan mag ook. De embajadas, de gespeelde onderhandelingen tussen beide partijen die op een overgave uitlopen, vinden plaats op de Plaça de l'Església voor de kerk met de blauwe koepels.
De religieuze helft loopt parallel en is ouder: een negendaagse novenari, de bloemenhulde aan de Verge del Consol, patrones van Altea, en de naspeling van de aankomst van het Christusbeeld in de baai. Zondag is de dag van de Crist del Sagrari, met een mis om twaalf uur, 's middags een processie door het oude centrum en 's avonds vuurwerk boven de boulevard. Reken op afgesloten straten in het centrum en geen parkeerplek in de buurt van de oude stad.
🇪🇸 El último fin de semana de septiembre Altea celebra sus Fiestas Mayores en honor al Santíssim Crist del Sagrari y a Sant Blai, y son lo más grande que ocurre aquí en todo el año. Dieciocho filaes, las comparsas moras y cristianas, toman las calles con desfiles, alardos, bandas de música y mascletaes. Están declaradas Fiesta de Interés Turístico de la Comunitat Valenciana.
Dos noches sostienen el conjunto: la Entrada Mora el sábado y la Cristiana el lunes, ambas hacia las 20:00 y por la avenida que pasa frente al ayuntamiento. A lo largo del recorrido se colocan sillas, porque un desfile se alarga varias horas; también puedes verlo de pie. Las embajadas, las negociaciones teatralizadas entre los dos bandos que terminan en rendición, se representan en la Plaça de l'Església, delante de la iglesia de las cúpulas azules.
La parte religiosa transcurre en paralelo y es más antigua: el novenari, la Ofrenda de Flores a la Verge del Consol, patrona de Altea, y la escenificación de la llegada del Cristo a la bahía. El domingo es el día del Crist del Sagrari, con misa al mediodía, procesión por el casco antiguo por la tarde y castillo de fuegos artificiales junto al mar por la noche. Cuenta con calles cortadas en el centro y sin aparcamiento cerca del casco antiguo.
