🇬🇧 One night at the end of July, 32 children from Xàbia become the pieces of a chess game on a ten by ten metre board laid out on the Avinguda Lepanto, surrounded by stands for around a thousand people. A narrator and two players read out the moves of a famous historic game, and around that game a play is performed: a different story every year, with costumes, music and lighting. This is the town's only Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional, a title it has held since 2002.
It started in 1996, when the local chess club proposed it to the Comissió de Festes Mare de Déu de Loreto for the centenary of the port district's fiestas, and it has run every year since. The children are between six and fourteen and come from schools in the town. One of the two players is a local school chess champion; the other is an invited guest, over the years including the astronaut Pedro Duque.
You do not need to know how chess works to follow it — the play carries the evening, and the moves are explained as they happen. Access is free or by small donation depending on the year. It starts at 22:30, the seating fills up well before that, and parking anywhere near Duanes de la Mar is gone by early evening.
🇳🇱 Op een avond eind juli worden 32 kinderen uit Xàbia de stukken van een schaakpartij op een bord van tien bij tien meter op de Avinguda Lepanto, omringd door tribunes voor zo'n duizend mensen. Een verteller en twee spelers lezen de zetten voor van een beroemde historische partij, en rond die partij wordt een toneelstuk opgevoerd: elk jaar een ander verhaal, met kostuums, muziek en belichting. Dit is het enige evenement van de gemeente met de status Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional, en dat al sinds 2002.
Het begon in 1996, toen de plaatselijke schaakclub het voorstelde aan de Comissió de Festes Mare de Déu de Loreto voor het eeuwfeest van de havenbuurt, en sindsdien gebeurt het elk jaar. De kinderen zijn tussen de zes en veertien en komen van scholen uit het dorp. Een van de twee spelers is de schoolkampioen schaken; de ander is een genodigde, in de loop der jaren onder anderen astronaut Pedro Duque.
Je hoeft niets van schaken te weten om het te volgen — het toneelstuk draagt de avond, en de zetten worden onderweg uitgelegd. Toegang is gratis of tegen een kleine donatie, afhankelijk van het jaar. Het begint om 22:30 uur, de tribunes zitten ruim daarvoor vol, en parkeren in de buurt van Duanes de la Mar lukt vanaf de vroege avond niet meer.
🇪🇸 Una noche de finales de julio, 32 niños de Xàbia se convierten en las piezas de una partida de ajedrez sobre un tablero de diez por diez metros instalado en la avinguda Lepanto, rodeado de gradas para cerca de mil personas. Un narrador y dos jugadores van leyendo las jugadas de una partida histórica célebre, y alrededor de esa partida se representa una obra de teatro: cada año una historia distinta, con vestuario, música e iluminación. Es la única Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional del municipio, título que ostenta desde 2002.
Nació en 1996, cuando el club de ajedrez local se lo propuso a la Comissió de Festes Mare de Déu de Loreto con motivo del centenario de las fiestas del barrio del puerto, y desde entonces se repite cada año. Los niños tienen entre seis y catorce años y salen de los colegios del pueblo. Uno de los dos jugadores es el campeón escolar de ajedrez; el otro es un invitado, y por ahí han pasado nombres como el astronauta Pedro Duque.
No hace falta saber jugar al ajedrez para seguirlo: la obra sostiene la velada y las jugadas se explican sobre la marcha. La entrada es gratuita o mediante donativo simbólico según el año. Empieza a las 22:30, las gradas se llenan bastante antes y aparcar cerca de Duanes de la Mar es imposible desde primera hora de la tarde.
