🇬🇧 On the night of 23 June the beach of l'Albir fills up for Sant Joan, the shortest night of the year and traditionally the start of summer. The one thing to know before you go is that you cannot light a fire here: the Dirección General de Costas banned bonfires on this beach years ago, and a single official fire, supervised by the emergency services, is burned at midnight.
The evening is run by the Mayorales of the November fiestas, who set up a bar with drinks and food at modest prices and put the proceeds towards the fiestas. Music starts in the early evening with a DJ or a live band and the night usually winds down between 02:00 and 03:00. Along with fires, barbecues, glass bottles, sky lanterns and leaving litter behind are all prohibited.
Expect several hundred to a few thousand people, so the streets behind the beach fill with parked cars long before dark; walking or cycling is easier. The custom of jumping the waves at midnight comes from a pre-Christian midsummer rite meant to drive off bad luck, and it survives here in a beach where pebbles rather than sand means you will want something on your feet.

Wat je vooraf moet weten: zelf vuur maken mag hier niet. De Dirección General de Costas verbood jaren geleden de vreugdevuren op dit strand, en om middernacht wordt één officieel vuur ontstoken, onder toezicht van de hulpdiensten.
De avond wordt georganiseerd door de Mayorales van de novemberfeesten, die een bar neerzetten met eten en drinken tegen schappelijke prijzen en de opbrengst gebruiken voor die feesten. De muziek begint in de vroege avond met een dj of livemuziek en rond 02:00 tot 03:00 uur loopt het af. Naast vuur zijn ook barbecues, glazen flessen, wensballonnen en het achterlaten van afval verboden.
Reken op enkele honderden tot een paar duizend mensen, dus de straten achter het strand staan ruim voor het donker vol geparkeerde auto's; te voet of op de fiets gaat makkelijker. Het gebruik om om middernacht door de golven te springen komt uit een voorchristelijk midzomerritueel dat ongeluk moest verjagen, en het houdt hier stand op een strand van kiezels in plaats van zand, dus iets aan je voeten is geen overbodige luxe.

Lo primero que conviene saber es que aquí no se puede encender fuego: la Dirección General de Costas prohibió hace años las hogueras en esta playa, y a medianoche se quema una única hoguera oficial, supervisada por las fuerzas de seguridad.
La velada la organizan los Mayorales de las fiestas de noviembre, que instalan una barra con bebida y comida a precios populares y destinan la recaudación a esas fiestas. La música empieza a primera hora de la tarde con un DJ o un grupo en directo y la noche suele terminar entre las 02:00 y las 03:00. Además del fuego, están prohibidas las barbacoas, los envases de vidrio, los farolillos voladores y abandonar residuos.
Cuenta con varios cientos o algunos miles de personas, así que las calles de detrás de la playa se llenan de coches mucho antes de que anochezca; ir a pie o en bici resulta más cómodo. La costumbre de saltar las olas a medianoche procede de un rito precristiano de solsticio que buscaba ahuyentar la mala suerte, y aquí se mantiene en una playa de cantos rodados en lugar de arena, de modo que agradecerás llevar algo en los pies.
