🇬🇧 On the night of 13 August Elx sets off close to 2,000 kilos of gunpowder and some 70,000 rockets, not from one launch site but from balconies, rooftops and squares across the whole city at once. It starts around 23:15 and for the best part of an hour the sky over the palm groves is continuous noise and light. Locals call it the night of fire.
Just before midnight it all stops. The street lights go out, the city falls silent, and the Gloria Patri is sung, the closing song of the Misteri d'Elx. Then the Palmera de la Virgen is launched from the bell tower of the Basílica de Santa María: a single palm-shaped burst reaching more than 300 metres that turns night into day for a few seconds. Afterwards the lights come back on, a small figure of the Virgin is lit on the tower, and the city sings Aromas Ilicitanos from the balconies.
Practical notes. It ends traditionally with eating watermelon, which is why you will see slices being handed round everywhere. The whole city is the venue, so there is no single best spot, though the area around the basilica gives you the Palmera overhead. Expect crowds, closed roads and a lot of spent fireworks underfoot, and bring something over your ears if you are sensitive to noise.

Het begint rond 23:15 uur en bijna een uur lang is de hemel boven de palmbossen onafgebroken herrie en licht. De inwoners noemen het de nacht van het vuur.
Vlak voor middernacht stopt alles. De straatverlichting gaat uit, de stad valt stil en het Gloria Patri klinkt, het slotlied van het Misteri d'Elx. Dan wordt vanaf de klokkentoren van de Basílica de Santa María de Palmera de la Virgen gelanceerd: één palmvormige ontploffing van ruim 300 meter die de nacht een paar seconden in dag verandert. Daarna gaan de lichten weer aan, licht er een klein Mariabeeld op de toren op, en zingt de stad vanaf de balkons Aromas Ilicitanos.
Praktisch. Het eindigt traditioneel met het eten van watermeloen, vandaar dat overal partjes worden rondgedeeld. De hele stad is het decor, dus er is geen beste plek, al krijg je rond de basiliek de Palmera recht boven je. Reken op drukte, afgesloten straten en veel afgebrand vuurwerk op de grond, en neem iets voor je oren mee als je gevoelig bent voor lawaai.

Justo antes de medianoche se detiene todo. Se apaga el alumbrado, la ciudad calla y suena el Gloria Patri, el último canto del Misteri d'Elx. Entonces se lanza desde el campanario de la Basílica de Santa María la Palmera de la Virgen: una sola explosión en forma de palmera de más de 300 metros que convierte la noche en día durante unos segundos. Después vuelven las luces, se ilumina una pequeña Virgen en la torre y la ciudad canta Aromas Ilicitanos desde los balcones.
Apuntes prácticos. La tradición manda terminar comiendo sandía, por eso verás repartir tajadas por todas partes. El escenario es la ciudad entera, así que no hay un sitio mejor que otro, aunque junto a la basílica tendrás la Palmera justo encima. Cuenta con aglomeraciones, calles cortadas y mucha pólvora quemada por el suelo, y lleva algo para los oídos si el ruido te molesta.
