🇬🇧 On 14 and 15 August the Basílica de Santa María in Elx stages the Misteri d'Elx, a sung medieval drama about the death, assumption and coronation of the Virgin. It has been performed here since the fifteenth century, is sung in Valencian with passages in Latin, and is the only surviving liturgical drama in Europe still performed inside the church it was written for. UNESCO listed it in 2001 in the first proclamation of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
It comes in two parts: La Vespra on the 14th, on the death of the Virgin, and La Festa on the 15th, on her coronation. What people remember is the machinery. An angel descends from the dome of the church inside a device called the Mangrana, a pomegranate that opens in mid-air, and the whole thing runs on winches and ropes worked by hand. Everyone on stage is a local: the singers are men and boys from the town, not professionals, who rehearse all year.
Two practical points. Entry to the August performances is free but capacity is limited, and there are paid dress rehearsals in the days before. And in even-numbered years there are extra performances at the start of November, which are far easier to get into than the August ones and take place in a city that is not simultaneously setting off two tonnes of fireworks.
🇳🇱 Op 14 en 15 augustus wordt in de Basílica de Santa María in Elx het Misteri d'Elx opgevoerd, een gezongen middeleeuws drama over de dood, hemelvaart en kroning van Maria. Het wordt hier sinds de vijftiende eeuw gespeeld, gezongen in het Valenciaans met passages in het Latijn, en het is het enige overgebleven liturgische drama in Europa dat nog wordt opgevoerd in de kerk waarvoor het geschreven is. UNESCO nam het in 2001 op in de allereerste lijst van meesterwerken van het orale en immateriële erfgoed.
Het bestaat uit twee delen: La Vespra op de 14e, over de dood van Maria, en La Festa op de 15e, over haar kroning. Wat mensen bijblijft is de techniek. Een engel daalt uit de koepel van de kerk neer in een constructie die de Mangrana heet, een granaatappel die halverwege in de lucht opengaat, en het geheel draait op lieren en touwen die met de hand worden bediend. Iedereen op het toneel komt uit de stad: de zangers zijn mannen en jongens uit Elx, geen beroepskrachten, die er het hele jaar voor repeteren.
Twee praktische punten. Toegang tot de augustusvoorstellingen is gratis maar de capaciteit is beperkt, en in de dagen ervoor zijn er generale repetities met kaartverkoop. En in even jaren zijn er extra voorstellingen begin november, waar je aanzienlijk makkelijker binnenkomt dan in augustus, in een stad die dan niet tegelijk twee ton vuurwerk afsteekt.

Se representa aquí desde el siglo XV, se canta en valenciano con pasajes en latín y es el único drama litúrgico que sobrevive en Europa representándose todavía dentro del templo para el que se escribió. La UNESCO lo incluyó en 2001 en la primera proclamación de Obras Maestras del Patrimonio Oral e Inmaterial de la Humanidad.
Consta de dos partes: La Vespra el día 14, sobre la muerte de la Virgen, y La Festa el 15, sobre su coronación. Lo que se queda en la memoria es la tramoya. Un ángel desciende desde la cúpula dentro de un artefacto llamado la Mangrana, una granada que se abre en el aire, y todo funciona con tornos y cuerdas accionados a mano. Quienes actúan son vecinos: los cantores son hombres y niños de la ciudad, no profesionales, que ensayan durante todo el año.
Dos apuntes prácticos. La entrada a las representaciones de agosto es libre pero el aforo es limitado, y en los días previos hay ensayos generales con entrada de pago. Y en los años pares hay representaciones extraordinarias a principios de noviembre, bastante más accesibles que las de agosto y en una ciudad que no está quemando a la vez dos toneladas de pólvora.
